Sew a Facing onto the Armscye

Here's how I sew a facing onto the armscye of a sleeveless garment.

Fold the fabric right sides together or wrong sides together. Cut out each of front and back armscye facing through both layers. Do this also for the interfacing. Mark a dot on the very edge of each piece for each notch. Matching the pieces and the dots, fuse the interfacing to the wrong sides of the facings.

1.

Place one front and one back right sides together, similar to the picture (in that the pieces are not the same), for each side. At this time you would only stitch your seam at the very top. Do this for both sides.

Press the seam flat, then press it open. Sew a triple-zigzag stitch along the outer edge of the facings, with length = 1 and width = max.

2.

Lay the garment right side up so that the shoulder seam allowance is under the garment.

Lay the facing right side down so you can see the interfacing and the facing's shoulder seam allowance. Make sure that the single and double dots are going to match. If they don't match, you may need to swap arm facings to the other side.

3.

Lay the facing over the garment, right sides together, so that the dots match, the shoulder seams match, and the edges match. Sew the seam inside the curve.
