Florida Bath Towels and Wash Cloths

Projects

Similar to the hair towels is the Florida bath towel idea. It is so moist here, that heavy bath towels seem to take forever to dry. Our Florida bath towels are made of the cheapest woven terry cloth that we could find. I also make our wash cloths. This is an excellent rotary cutting and serging exercise.

Here's a picture of the finished wash cloths (and a peek at my finished sewing table):

Start:

Both projects start with 45-inch-wide woven terry cloth in the length given below. Zigzag or serge the cut ends and launder the fabric two or three times. Square off the cut ends before continuing.

Cut:

For two Florida bath towels, buy 2.25 yards of woven terry cloth, or the length desired to go over and drop from the towel rod. Cut the fabric straight down the middle, parallel to the selvages.

For 12 wash cloths, buy 1.5 yards of woven terry cloth. For large washcloths, approximately 12" X 15", cut the fabric lengthwise into three equal strips about 15" wide, then cut each strip into 12" pieces. For regular washcloths, cut into 12" squares. Using a glass or ceramic cup, round the corners with a rotary blade.

Finish:

Serge the cut edges with narrow balanced serging, leaving thread tails about an inch long. Launder the towels or washcloths one more time. Now serge with a wider stitch, overlap the beginning stitches for about an inch, stitch off the side, and cut off the thread tail.

Done!
